Saw an interesting article once on that generic topic
Basically saying that if you subscribe to Freudian theories of psychology, then propagation of the species is an underlying component of our decisions and actions.
Under that psych model, what makes a man "attractive" as a mate is to be a good provider. In the modern era, rich and powerful makes for a better provider than big and strong.
So men strive to be rich and powerful to be attractive to women. Women like men who are rich and powerful because they make good providers.
And yet, we act surprised when rich and powerful men (regardless of their political leanings) have various indiscretions with women.
What should be surprising is when a rich and powerful man doesn't.
At least if you subscribe to Freud's theories.
